Q: What is the US Census?

A: The US Census, conducted every ten years, is a count of every person living in the United States, mandated by the Constitution. It's the responsibility of the U.S. Census Bureau, a part of the Department of Commerce. The census data is used for important purposes like determining representation in Congress and distributing federal funds.

  1. Mandated by the Constitution: Article I, Section 2 of the U.S. Constitution requires the census to be taken every ten years.

  3. Determines Representation: The census results determine the number of seats each state gets in the U.S. House of Representatives.

  5. Provides Data for Planning: Governments and organizations use census data to plan for public services like schools, hospitals, and transportation.
