The Town of Brentwood was awarded $160,000 by the US Department of Transportation Safe Streets and Roads For All Grant.

Brentwood, MD–The Town of Brentwood secured $160,000 in federal grant funding from the US Department of Transportation to develop a comprehensive, data-driven safety action plan aimed at improving road safety for all modes of transportation. Funding is provided through the Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) grant, which supports initiatives to enhance safety and help prevent deaths and serious injuries on the nation’s roadways.

As part of the safety action plan, Town-wide transportation-related data will be collected and analyzed to identify and prioritize which areas in the Town need roadway safety improvements. These improvements encompass all modes of transportation– including motorists, pedestrians, and bicyclists. The plan will consider a range of low-cost, high-impact strategies and adopt innovative technologies to promote safety throughout the Town. The plan will also develop a toolbox of safety improvements and countermeasures that the Town of Brentwood Public Works Department will draw from for future projects.?

Creating a safety action plan will allow the Town of Brentwood to be eligible for future implementation grants.?

“This funding is necessary to make upgrades to the Town’s transportation infrastructure and improve safety,” said Town of Brentwood Mayor Rocio Treminio-Lopez. “I want to thank our Town of Brentwood Staff, the Police Department, and the Public Works Department, along with the Town Council for their collaboration and contributions to this grant and the Maryland Department of Transportation and Representative Glenn Ivey for their support in helping to secure this funding.

The Town of Brentwood has previously implemented successful traffic calming measures to prevent accidents and deaths. Along with residents’ petitions and the passage of Resolution 2023-06 Creating the Safe Streets for All Task Force and directing the creation of a Vision Zero Safe Streets Plan, the Town was able to secure Maryland.

Department of Transportation State Highway Administration traffic engineering recommendations and implementation to improve traffic safety on 38th Street / MD 208.

“Safety in our town is important–whether a resident, a business owner, or a visitor, we want safe streets for all who live and visit here,” said Town of Brentwood Vice Mayor, Stefan Leggin.

Vice Mayor Leggin, in coordination with the Brentwood Public Works Committee and the Public Works Department, will deliver the action plan. The Committee will also work with Town staff, Council, residents, businesses, and stakeholders to create a Vision Zero Action Plan and demonstration projects to reduce fatalities and serious injuries.
