October was designated as Domestic Violence Awareness in 1989 to acknowledge survivors of domestic violence as well as to give a voice to those who may still find themselves in violent situations. Domestic violence exists in all communities and doesn’t discriminate based on race, religion, age, gender, sexual orientation, nationality, or socioeconomic status. Physical violence is often accompanied by emotional abuse and controlling behavior as a part of a larger pattern of dominance and control. Domestic violence often results in physical injury, psychological and emotional trauma, and even death.

In the United States, over 20 million people experience domestic violence annually, according to the National Institutes of Health. Covid-19 and its accompanying lockdown, social distancing, and economic hardships have exacerbated domestic violence and sadly many escape routes for victims are not readily available. It is therefore even more important to know what red flags to look for.

Verbal Insults
Extreme jealousy ( and/or isolating you from friends and family)
Preventing you from making decisions (including about from work and school)
Financial abuse
Pressuring you into intimate contact
Pressuring you into using drugs and/or alcohol
Intimidating you with weapons
Destroying your property and/or belongings

If you or someone you know are a victim of domestic violence, you can call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-787-3244 or contact the Brentwood Police Department for help creating a safety plan.

Maryland Child Safety Seats/Seatbelts
While out around town I have personally witnessed several children riding in vehicles without being properly secured in seat belts or a car seat.
Under Maryland law, you must secure any children that you are driving in a passenger vehicle (like a Class A vehicle), a truck (like a Class E vehicle), or a multipurpose vehicle (like a Class M vehicle).
Age 0-7: Any child, age 0-7, who is shorter than 4 feet, 9 inches, must be secured in a child safety seat. If a child is less than 8 years old, but at least 4 feet, 9 inches tall, they must be secured in either a child safety seat or a seat belt.
Age 8-15: Any child under age 16 must be secured in either a child safety seat or a seat belt.

A “child safety seat” means any child restraint device, including a booster seat, that the manufacturer certifies to meet federal standards. The law requires that the child safety seat be used according to its instructions, and the instructions of the vehicle manufacturer.

The law applies to all in-State and out-of-State vehicles.
The Maryland Department of Health recommends that babies and young toddlers ride rear-facing as long as possible. A child should ride in a rear-facing seat until reaching the maximum weight or height of the seat. A typical infant-only (carrier style) seat may be used to 22 pounds - though a few new infant-only seats have weight limits of 30 - 35 pounds. Once a child outgrows the infant-only seat, a rear-facing convertible seat should be used. Convertible seats may be used rear-facing until 30 - 45 pounds.
Always check the car seat instruction manual or labels for specific weight and height limits.

NATURE NOTES

Edible forests, locally grown produce, and sustainable living is on nearly everyone’s radar these days. This month we would like to introduce a tree/shrub that is gorgeous, super tasty, and can help reduce pollution transference to the Chesapeake Bay. This tree is Prunus americana!

There is nothing remotely cryptic about its name. There are a handful of Prunus species in our area, such as the native black cherry and pin cherry but this one is a real gem. The genus name “Prunus” is Latin and translates, literally to “plum tree,” which is obviously a reference to the type of fruit it produces, and the specific epithet, “americana” simply references where it is found. This tree goes by the common name of Wild Plum and that plume, or drupe often grows in clusters.

If you need more reasons to plant this tree, consider that it also is the host plant for several pollinators such as the coral hairstreak butterfly and the American dagger moth. So, what are you waiting for? Those pies don’t get made without some juicy fruit!

Mayor Treminio-Lopez and the Council, of the Town of Brentwood, passed RESOLUTION 2021-15, which permits the installation of:

•two (2) stop signs on 34th Street

•one (1) at Upshur Street and

•one (1) at Varnum Street

The installation of the stop signs were completed Friday, October 1, 2021.

This resolution, with the recommendation of the Town of Brentwood Police Department, along with the cooperation with Mayor Benitez of the City of Mount Rainier, MD, is part of the Town’s strategic plan to augment pedestrian safety. Additionally, these new stop signs will strengthen the traffic calming measures for the Town of Brentwood’s vehicular traffic that travels throughout the Town.

Town Issued Trash Bins

The Town issues one (1) Trash Bin per residence/home. The bins remain the property of the Town and are assigned to specific addresses.

Residents are not charged for the bins but are expected to place their trash into bags before putting the trash in the bins.
If your bin has been damaged or needs to be replaced, please contact the Town Office at info@brentwoodmd.gov or (301) 927-3344.

If you have more than (1) Town issued Trash bin, please place it out for our Public Works Department to pick up.

You may purchase additional trash bins at your own cost but are only allowed to have (1) Town-issued bin.

Through their free search tool and database of Alzheimer’s care facilities, families in need of care for their loved ones can locate licensed care homes and communities in the Brentwood area that are best equipped to provide care for their loved ones.

BRENTWOOD BUSINESS COVID ASSISTANCE FUND

The Brentwood Business COVID Assistance Fund was approved by the Mayor and Council to provide economic relief to Brentwood businesses. The fund includes $50,000 to support Brentwood-based businesses.
The maximum grant award is $2,000.

The Fund consists of monies from the public sector for the distribution of cash benefits to businesses requiring economic relief. It is designed to substantially aid businesses in times of dire distress and need. The Fund allows for short-term relief through community building and stability.
