AN ORDINANCE TO INCREASE THE SALARY OF THE MAYOR AND COUNCIL

TOWN OF BRENTWOOD

 ORDINANCE 2017-05

 

AN ORDINANCE TO INCREASE THE SALARY OF THE MAYOR AND COUNCIL EFFECTIVE JULY 1, 2017

 

WHEREAS, Section 302 of the Charter of the Town of Brentwood provides that “Each councilmember shall receive an annual salary which shall be as specified from time to time by an ordinance passed by the Council in the regular course of its business; and  

WHEREAS, the Charter further outlines that that the salary specified at the time any Council takes office shall not be changed during the period for which that Council was elected; and  

WHEREAS, the Charter requires that such a salary ordinance be approved by the majority of the qualified voters of the municipality voting thereon at a regular or special municipal election pursuant to Town of Brentwood Charter.

WHEREAS, the Mayor and Council realize the increasing amount of time and attention required to provide the required oversight and management of Town affairs; and

WHEREAS, the Mayor and Council Members presently seated desire to increase the salary of the succeeding Mayor and Council to $500 per month for the Mayor and $400 per month to the Council Members.

 

WHEREAS, in accordance with the requirement that this increase be approved by a majority of the voters, the Mayor and Council submit the following question for inclusion on the elections ballot on May 1, 2017. 

“In accordance with the provisions of Section 302 of the Brentwood Charter, the Mayor and Council propose to increase the salary of the succeeding Mayor and Council from the present $300 and $225 per month to $500 per month for the Mayor and $400 per month for each Council Member recognizing the increased amount of time and attention required to manage and oversee complex Town matters.  Do you approve such an increase? 

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED BY THE MAYOR AND COUNCIL OF THE TOWN OF BRENTWOOD this _____________ day of ______________, 2017 as follows:

 

The prescribed question is approved and shall be included on the voting ballot on May 1, 2017; and

Upon verification by the Chief Elections Judge that the majority of the voters have approved this increase, this ordinance will be in effect and the approved increase shall become effective on July 1, 2017. 

If verification by the Chief Elections Judge determines  that the majority of the voters have NOT approved this increase, this ordinance shall be withdrawn.
